Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”) and major Indian general contractor and comprehensive engineering company, Larsen & Toubro Limited, have received an order for electrification system works covering 508 km of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project being undertaken by India’s National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited.
With India’s population growth and economic development over recent years, chronic traffic congestion and air pollution have become critical issues facing the country. As a solution to these social issues, the Japanese and Indian governments are working towards the development of a high-speed rail in India based on Japan’s high-speed rail system.
In 2022, Sojitz received an order for joint construction of Sabarmati Depot, the sole general depot in the region, and this new electrification order is a subsequent order for this rail project. Electrification system works will cover 14 power stations as well as overhead equipment and power distribution systems for station buildings and central command centers along all Mumbai-Ahmedabad lines. Construction is expected to begin during FY2023. This project will make partial use of the yen-based ODA loan* provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to India.
* Last December, JICA signed an agreement with the Indian government to provide Japanese ODA loans as fifth tranche to finance the rail project with a cumulative commitment amount of approximately JPY 1.395 trillion.
Sojitz has designated India as a key focus area under its Medium-term Management Plan 2023, and Sojitz will continue to expand advanced, high-speed rail systems to contribute to India’s transportation infrastructure and economic development.
