Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”) and major Indian general contractor and comprehensive engineering company, Larsen & Toubro Limited, have received an order for joint construction work on the Sabarmati depot as part of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail being undertaken by India’s National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited. The amount of the order for the design and construction of the depot along with procurement of related maintenance equipment will total approximately JPY 63 billion.

Against the backdrop of India’s population growth and economic development, demand for domestic travel has grown in recent years in India along with the urgent need to establish a stable mass transportation system.
This yen-based ODA loan project will construct India's first high-speed rail, spanning 508 km in length and connecting the city of Mumbai on the western coast of the state of Maharashtra with the city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat.
Transportation time on the existing limited express is seven hours, which is projected to be reduced to two hours to travel the same distance with the high-speed train. The construction of a high-frequency mass transit system will not only increase convenience for passengers, but also reduce air pollution and noise leveraging the merits of a railway with a low environment impact that will also contribute to the economic development of areas along the rail line.
Construction will involve the development of the only comprehensive rail depot in Sabarmati, which is located northwest of Ahmedabad, the largest city in the state of Gujarat. Construction will begin in 2023 with completion expected in 2028.
Sojitz has previously received civil and track work, electrification, and signal and telecommunication work orders for the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor running between Delhi and Mumbai from the government-operated Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. Moving forward, Sojitz will continue to develop freight and passenger rail infrastructure to contribute to India’s development.
