Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”) has made an equity investment in U.S.-based biomethane production company Fidem Energy LLC (“Fidem”), through its fully owned subsidiary, Sojitz Corporation of America. Fidem will become an equity method affiliate of Sojitz through this investment, and Sojitz will enter into the business of producing and selling biomethane in the U.S.
Located in the Southeastern United States of America, Fidem is engaged in the production and sale of biomethane that derives from raw landfill gas. With over 30 years of experience in the solid waste management industry, Fidem’s biomethane business leverages the company’s established network of partners and expertise in landfill operations. The company currently produces biomethane in Tennessee, supplies the domestic market, and holds a portfolio of additional development rights for biomethane production, currently in various stages of development.
Biomethane is a clean, renewable energy produced by refining landfill gas generated through the natural decomposition of municipal solid waste. The process removes carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and other trace gases to produce biomethane. In the U.S., waste generation rates are expected to increase with population and economic growth, making biomethane a long-term sustainable energy source.
In the U.S., biomethane is currently used as a transportation fuel, and across various industrial and municipal utility sectors. In 2025, biomethane demand rose significantly, increasing 24 percent from the previous year.*1 Moving forward, market demand is expected to grow further, driven by the need to enhance energy security, as well as decarbonization initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the replacement of fossil-based natural gas.
Through this partnership, Sojitz and Fidem aim to expand the biomethane business throughout the U.S. by coupling Fidem’s expertise on landfill biomethane development and operations with Sojitz’s longstanding experience in business development and global networks. Sojitz expects to supply biomethane to Japan and other countries across Asia, as well as other regions.
Under its Medium-term Management Plan 2026, Sojitz has established green transformation business as one of its strategic focus areas. Sojitz is also advancing a biomethane business in India, the company aims to strengthen and expand its earnings base in this field while contributing to decarbonization.
