Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”) has launched “Hi-Kii” as Japan’s first*¹ quoting platform for IT asset disposition (ITAD*²) as of May 14. Hi-Kii is a one-stop service that enables businesses to easily receive and compare ITAD quotes from multiple providers as well as streamline contract management. User companies seeking to dispose of used PCs and other IT devices can contract highly trusted ITAD companies using the Hi-Kii platform to ensure data security of the IT assets in the reuse and recycling process. To manage the Hi-Kii platform, Sojitz will leverage the expertise it has gained through its IT device reuse and recycling businesses to ensure appropriate disposal and usage of IT assets, promote recycling of urban mines, and contribute to the realization of a recycling-based society.

For disposal of IT devices such as used PCs, it is crucial that companies contract reliable ITAD providers for data sanitization to ensure data security with the erasure of sensitive data. However, due to shortages of IT system personnel and time-consuming process of obtaining quotes, companies often opt for free disposal by waste collectors handling defective products. If the appropriate ITAD provider is not contracted, there is a significant risk of data leaks of sensitive company information stemming from incomplete data sanitization. From an environmental standpoint, a major issue is the disposal of IT devices—without being recognized as IT assets—which results in the loss of valuable metal resources that could be effectively recycled.

Hi-Kii is a one-stop platform service for IT asset buybacks that simplifies the process from selecting an ITAD provider to streamlining contract management while simultaneously ensuring data security of IT assets in the reuse and recycling process. First, user companies register their desired IT devices for disposal on the Hi-Kii website before selecting either the standard data erasure plan which issues a certificate of erasure or the special data erasure plan that allows users to select the method of erasure and other specifications. Quotes can be obtained starting from a single device with a wide range of devices covered by the service including laptops, servers, smartphones, tablets, and other IT devices. The Hi-Kii quoting platform allows users to compare quotes for data erasure and IT asset buyback from multiple ITAD providers simultaneously as well as select and conclude contracts with the provider as part of its one-stop service. As all contracts are standardized on the platform, users can significantly reduce the time and effort required to conclude a contract regardless of the provider selected.

Among the approximately 100 ITAD companies*¹ in Japan, only the companies that fulfill the stringent security standards set by Sojitz are allowed to join the Hi-Kii platform. When selecting a ITAD company on the platform, users can rest assured that their data security will be protected in the reuse and recycling process for their IT assets. Going forward, the number of participating providers is expected to steadily increase.

Resource recycling is critical for providing solutions to social issues such as realizing decarbonization, reducing environmental burdens, and the depletion of natural resources. Amidst these circumstances, Sojitz is working towards building new business in the circular economy sector both in Japan and overseas. In the metal resources field, Sojitz has positioned ITAD as central to establishing its urban mine recycling business. Sojitz has acquired experience in the reuse and recycling business for IT devices through its investment in TES-AMM JAPAN in 2021 as well as through its 2023 investment in eCycle Solutions Inc., a major e-waste recycling and disposal company in Canada which handles disposal of household appliances and electronic devices.

Moving forward, Sojitz will provide users with highly convenient services through the Hi-Kii platform, which will enable companies to conduct proper disposal and reuse of IT devices, promote urban mine recycling, and contribute to the realization of a recycling-based society.
