- First Project to Receive Support from the Philippines’ CARS Program -
Feb. 27, 2017
Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (“MMPC”), a joint venture between Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”) and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (“Mitsubishi Motors”) in the Philippines, has commenced production of a compact sedan model called the Mirage G4 (also known as the Atrage in other regions) as of February 17th. Today, a ceremony was held at Malacanang Palace (the Presidential residence) in Manila to commemorate the start of production, with a number of government officials in attendance, including President Rodrigo Duterte. The project has added a new production line to MMPC’s factory, utilizing a subsidy provided under the Philippines government’s CARS (Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy) Program. This is the first time a business has made use of this support. The plant’s production capacity totals 50,000 vehicles per year, and MMPC plans to start production of the compact car model, Mirage, starting this May.
MMPC began manufacturing automobiles in the Philippines in 1964. In 2009, they became the first automobile company in the Philippines to reach 500,000 vehicles produced, and just last year, this number climbed to 600,000 vehicles. Last year’s total sales were up 12.9% from the previous year, to 59,480 vehicles (15.3% of the market), and the company has recorded year-on-year growth for the past 10 years running.
MMPC has continued to grow alongside the Philippines’ auto industry, making use of the company’s long history and well-established business in the region. By helping to energize the auto industry going forward, they will contribute to strengthening the Philippines’ industrial foundations and promote economic advancement for the country.
