CSR at Sojitz

In June 2009, Group employees organized a round-table discussion under the theme of “Putting CSR into Practice in Our Work” to re-examine what CSR means to them and to the Sojitz Group. Since then, we continue to hold regular round-table discussions which deepen mutual understanding and stimulate communication in the Sojitz Group.

“How We Motivate Sojitz’s Future Leaders,” May 2011

A round-table discussion was held by 8 professional career personnel (Assistant Managers and Senior Leaders), who perform core operations in various business fields. In the discussion, they shared their experiences in performing various roles, which include providing assistance to the manager, linking managers with younger staff, and working to energize their section and promote communication while spurring younger members on to great things. They also talked about ideas they use to encourage and motivate themselves.

“How We Motivate Middle Management,” March 2011

A round-table discussion was held under the theme of “How middle management takes leadership of a team, and how they give vitality to the organization and increase motivation.” The managers indicated that it is important to relay the thoughts of top management to their section members and vice versa. In this discussion, they shared their feelings of challenge, reward, and responsibility as they work to connect top management with employees in their section.

“Putting CSR into Practice in Our Work,” June 2009

A round-table discussion was held for the purpose of having all employees think of what CSR means for Sojitz. Ten employees from various departments participated. Their first topic of discussion was why CSR is an important issue for the Sojitz Group today. Many participants commented on the change in attitude among customers and society overall, including the view that “it is now considered unacceptable for enterprises not to be aware of CSR.” It was clear from the discussion that employees broadly share the awareness that “no company can survive nowadays that is only interested in pursuing profit.” Many agreed with one participant’s comment that “the very work of a general trading company, which can contribute to local growth through its business activities, is a form of CSR.”

More detailed information about this round-table is available in CSR Report 2009
